| Laika was the name of a dog. Not just any dog either. Laika was an astronaut - an astrodog. In 1957, Laika was the first mammal ever to be put into space. There can never be another animal with such a resume, such a life. It was, however, stolen. When the Soviet put Laika on the ship Sputnik 2, they never designed it to be returnable. In other words, Laika was sent into space to die. Regret was expressed years later for sending the once-stray dog to die alone in the blackness of space, but all the words in the world could not bring back the brave little animal. As humans, we are all put on Earth to ultimately perish. We live out our lives for the short period of time that we walk the Earth, then we die. Millions and millions of people live, then millions and millions of people die. We were sent here to expire, it's as simple as that. Some, however, reach more. Some humans live their lives more full than others, reaching further and dreaming bigger. Some humans are like Laika. Why stick to the norm and live out your life on the Earth, when you can reach new distances. If anything, Laika shows us all that even a stray can soar beyond all others. Dream big; laugh often. optimist-prime "Laika" |
